BIO

Marcos Anziani (b. 1984) is an artist born in the Dominican Republic, raised in the Bronx, and now living and working in Connecticut. His paintings combine lyrical abstraction with expressionism in large, gestural strokes of color. The dazzling energy of the color is, as the artist says, curbed through context and line. Protean images of people and objects emerge from this technique, producing energetic paintings that dance over the canvas.

The mostly warm colors help balance and subdue the often chaotic forms. Taking influence from luminaries such as Willem de Kooning, Joan Miró and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Anziani moves forward with visual motifs borrowed from street and naive art while working in continuity with the tradition of Abstract Expressionism.

Marcos Anziani has garnered international recognition through a series of solo and group exhibitions across key cultural centers, including New York, Miami, Mexico City, and Moscow. Represented exclusively by Avant Gallery since 2022, Anziani debuted at the Norton Museum of Art in 2023, the same year he achieved his first auction success with Sotheby’s. His first major Miami exhibition, Before I Go, opened at Avant Gallery in October 2023, followed by a significant presentation at Art Miami that year.

Anziani’s upward trajectory continued in 2024 with a new group exhibition at the Norton Museum of Art and a sold-out solo presentation with Avant Gallery at the Hamptons Art Fair in July. His next show, Home by Dinner, is slated for December 2024 at Avant Gallery, aligning with Miami Art Week and presenting his latest exploration of contemporary abstraction.
