Chase Lock
BIO
Chase Lock is an American expressionist artist whose primary medium is oil painting. Born in Minot, North Dakota, Lock developed an early passion for art alongside his involvement in motocross racing. Growing up in rural America, he found an unconventional creative outlet in graffiti, using freight trains as moving canvases that carried his work across the country. The immediacy, risk, and freedom of this formative practice established an uncompromising approach to artmaking that continues to define his work today.
Lock eventually relocated to Los Angeles, where he developed a deep reverence for the layers of paint, history, and erasure embedded in the city’s graffiti culture. This visual language became foundational to his transition from the street to the studio. Working in oils, Lock moves fluidly between abstract expressionism and naïve figuration, building his compositions through vigorous brushwork, dense impasto, and expressive applications of color. His paintings balance raw immediacy with considered form, creating surfaces that feel both instinctive and deeply resolved.
Although the environment in which he creates has evolved, the instinct behind the work remains unchanged. Lock’s paintings retain the urgency and fearless energy of his early practice while expanding into a sophisticated exploration of form, surface, and materiality. Each composition reveals the physical act of painting, balancing spontaneity with intention and refinement.
Lock’s work has been featured in prominent projects and corporate collections, including Red Bull, Microsoft, Ducati, Amazon, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Rooted in personal history yet distinctly contemporary, his practice continues to resonate through its intensity, tactile presence, and relentless drive toward expression.
