Paul Parsons has masterfully harnessed the power of artificial intelligence to create a series of limited edition prints, inspired by the iconic style and spirit of Frida Kahlo. Each piece is a testament to the fusion of tradition and cutting-edge technology, offering a fresh perspective on the legendary artist. Parsons’s signature style blends the iconic and the unexpected; for this inaugural series, dubbed Fragments of Resilience, he has generated dynamic portraits of Frida Kahlo in which she appears constructed of porcelain and mosaics. On March 13, 2024, this first series of AI-generated artworks will be on view and made accessible to the public at Avant Gallery + Home in Aventura Mall.

ABOUT FRIDA KAHLO Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Born in Coyoacán, Mexico City, Kahlo is often remembered for her intense and vibrant use of color, as well as her depictions of pain and passion. Her work was heavily influenced by Mexican popular culture and indigenous Mexican culture, which she embraced as part of her identity.

Kahlo's life was marked by physical and emotional suffering. At the age of six, she contracted polio, which left her with a lifelong limp. In 1925, she was involved in a tragic bus accident that resulted in numerous severe injuries, leading to a lifetime of pain and medical complications. Despite these challenges, Kahlo's spirit and resilience shone through in her art, which often explored themes of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society.

Kahlo's work has been celebrated internationally as emblematic of Mexican national and indigenous traditions and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. Her Blue House (La Casa Azul) in Coyoacán, Mexico City, is now a museum dedicated to her life and art. Today, Frida Kahlo remains an icon of creativity, individuality, and perseverance, continuously inspiring artists and art lovers around the world.

ABOUT PAUL PARSONS Paul Parsons (b. 1986) began his career as a graphic designer in the UK. After nearly 15 years, Parsons delved into the cutting-edge, yet controversial, world of generative Artificial Intelligence. Drawing on pop-culture for inspiration, Parsons harnesses the new technology to put his own spin on recognizable characters, blending them digitally with unexpected mediums or places; snapshots of the Joker on vacation, busts of superheroes like Batman and Superman rendered in ornately painted porcelain and intricate compositions of rolled-up paper, or reimagined as priceless Fabergé pieces. By juxtaposing the subject, material, and context, Parsons creates new narratives that prompt us to view familiar characters from a different perspective.
